Castleford Coyotes – Offseason Recap 20/21
Firstly I would just like to say a huge thank you to all the other GM’s in the league who have helped me and welcomed me to the league.
When I took over the now Castleford Coyotes, the team was in dire straits. In my first offseason as GM in this prestigious league, I decided to burn the roster to the ground and hopefully rebuild it like a Phoenix (pun intended) from the ashes.
Below is a list of players brought in this year by the Coyotes with the aim of winning the cup in the next 5 years. Some risks had to be taken to rebuild the team for the future but in the long run, if a couple of the risks pay off the Coyotes could be contenders for many years in the future.
C – Jack Eichel. The biggest risk in my short term so far as GM. His neck is a massive issue obviously, but this is reflected in his $35 salary. I decided on a 5 year term as I am fully aware that It will take 2/3 years to turn this franchise around and hopefully by year 3 Jack will either have his move away from Buffalo or have the neck issues sorted.
C – Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. An established player who plays on the PP and gives it his all every night. A guy who puts up solid numbers which are helped massively by the talent of his team mates. His grit, determination and skill convinced me to take him for 4 years.
C – Ryan O’Reilly. A captain to the lead the franchise for the first few years. The first line centre for the Coyotes who can score and also assist in a variety of situations. One of the first names on the team sheet and a leader on and off the ice.
C – Phillip Danault. A 3rd/4th line centre who could put up great numbers with his new team. Danault has a one year “prove it” deal with the Coyotes to test the water before he gets offered a multiple year deal.
C – Dylan Strome. A waiver pick up from Moscow Red Army. A high potential 3rd overall pick who is yet to live up to his potential. Still on an EL contract so another low risk player who will be moving regularly between the majors and minors for the upcoming season.
LW – Yegor Sharangovich. A cheap two year deal for a kid who made a statement in his rookie year. A low risk possible high reward strategy with no real downside. Quite probably will move between the minors and majors on a regular basis for his first season unless he impresses.
LW – Jonathan Drouin. A young player who publicly suffered with mental health issues for the majority of last season. Although he has been cleared to play for the upcoming season another “prove it” year to show us he can keep fit.
LW – Yanni Gourde. A leader in the locker room with experience who gives it maximum effort each night. A short 1 year deal to the water to see how he can acclimatise and adapt his game to play in his new surroundings.
RW – Connor Garland. A gritty, skilful winger who can play a sublime game in the corners and along the boards. We expect big things from the young RW and with a three year deal the Coyotes have shown their commitment.
RW – Kasperi Kapanen. A waiver pick up from St Roch Hawks. A young player with a lot to prove. Still on an EL contract so a low risk strategy for a skilful player who is yet to live up to his potential.
RW – Evgenii Dadonov. A player almost guaranteed to hit 20 goals when playing for a full 82 game season. A cheap one year deal for a 3rd/4th liner who can put up some great numbers if surrounded by some talented playmakers.
RW – Mats Zuccarello. After an injury prone year in which he still put up decent points a one year deal seemed the correct decision to make for the 34 year old winger. Will play on the 3rd/4th line and can offer both goals and assists.
D – Jared Spurgeon. A top 2 defender who can eat up minutes every night. Can play on the PP and PK and will be a leader in the locker room for the younger players. A 3 year deal at $6 AAV may be a steal if Spurgeon can keep fit.
D – Noah Hanifin. A young top 6 possibly top 4 offensive defenceman who has is yet to play a full season while remaining fit. A two year deal for a kid who hopefully can put up some solid numbers and play decent minutes every night.
D – Ryan McDonagh. Another leader in the locker room who can eat up a lot minutes each night. A possible partnership on the top line with Spurgeon could see the two combine to create a cheap defensive unit with a solid core.
D – Duncan Keith. An experienced head to help the younger players with their change in surroundings and bring a winning ethic and mentality to the dressing room. A cheap one year deal for someone whose leadership can’t be measured in ice time alone.
D – Damon Severson. Another cheap one year deal for a bottom 4 defender with decent skill, speed and ability. His good hand eye and can pick out a pass which could see him gain a multiyear contract deal if he impresses.
G – Carey Price. After an injury riddled regular season the post season showed that Price still has a lot to offer when he gets off the operating room table. When fit he was one of the best Goalies in the league however injuries have led to him demanding a low price on the market.
To conclude, the first offseason for the Coyotes was certainly eventful with almost an entirely new roster coming through the doors. A good young core of players with some wisdom sprinkled in could see the team surprise a few people. We are proud what we have accomplished with the first offseason and the future looks bright. Some short term deals also mean we currently have the most cap available next season and could make some major moves to improve the team for the 2nd year.
