Hello and welcome to the 2021 DHL Entry Level Player Draft!
One odd year, followed by another in the fantasy hockey world. Where a lot of fantasy hockey leagues shuttered, we were able to turn last season into a success, crowning the Simi Valley Kings champion for both the 2019 and 2020 seasons. Thank you everyone for your dedication to the league in circumstances that were anything but ordinary. With those 2 troubling seasons now in the books, I hope we can look forward to things getting a little closer to normal around here in 2021, as we get the new season started with our EL Player Draft.
We have Stuart and the Castleford Coyotes joining us for their inaugural season, and selecting at 4th overall will be their first official move here in the league. Before we get to the 4th selection, however, we have to start things with the 1st selection, which coincidentally is owned my your truly! It's not often that I'm in the lottery, nevermind selecting 1st overall, so I'm very pleased to be fortunate enough to have had the wheel spin in my favour, granting me this privilege.
I've had the opportunity to select 1st overall only once before, back in the 2013 DHL EL Player Draft. There, I decided to be a know-it-all renegade and select the NHL's 3rd overall pick Jonathan Drouin, over the NHL's 1st overall pick Nathan MacKinnon.
Let's... uh... hope I learned my lesson this time, maybe?
Whatever the case, good luck to everyone in the league over the next couple weeks, and happy drafting!

So way back in 2014, I selected a player in the 4th Round, 41st overall. That player was Vincent Trocheck. He ended up being an absolute steal at that spot, and became one of my favourite players to ever skate for the Red Army. I kept him all-through his entire EL contract, playing 6 years for my team. However, he sustained a real nasty leg injury towards the end of his tenure, and was never the same afterwards. Also, the Panthers dealt him to the Hurricanes in a bit of a salary dump, which only reinforced my read on him. I thought he was cooked, so when his deal expired, I chose to just let him walk, despite the sentimental attachment. Well, Nebraska put a $1 auction on him last year, and it was so cheap that I considered getting in on it for personal reasons... But decided against it. I went with my brain, and not with my heart. Wouldn't you know, he has big bounce-back season, and is one of the best bargains of the DHL last season. Go figure. Anyways, we turn today... Where I have the 1st Overall selection after a hugely disappointing season for Moscow, thanks to some good fortune in the draft lottery. Owen Power was the consensus 1st Overall pick for the NHL draft this past year, possessing everything one could want in a modern NHL blueliner. Combined with the fact that I absolutely whiffed the only other time I had the 1st Overall selection in the DHL, I've had a lot of pressure on me to just go with Power and be done with it. Don't over-think it this time. That being said, I can't get over what I see in Matthew Beniers when I see him play. I see Vinny Trocheck. But a better version. Like Trocheck and Jonathan Toews had a baby, and Seattle wanted a piece as the first player to truly call their own. Now of course, maybe I'm overdoing it and he never lives up to the hype I'm putting down here, but I'm lucky to have this pick at all, so... I'm going with my heart, and not with my brain. With the 1st Overall selection in the 2021 DHL Entry Level Player Draft, Moscow Red Army conscript: Matthew Beniers, C, Seattle Kraken

Let me just say how happy I am that the two teams that have each won three DHL championships, including each of the last two, three of the last four and five of the last seven, are the teams that picked 1st and 2nd overall in the draft. This league is working really well at keeping things balanced and allowing the bad teams to improve themselves.
