Remember when you were 17? Remember all the dumb things you did then that you would never do at age 37, 27, or maybe even 22? Maybe you toilet papered someone's house, crank called people, vandalized something, got drunk and tried to tip over a cow...something. The point is you were an idiot because we were all idiots when we were 17. But we grew up, matured and now we do significantly less stupid things. With that said, St. Roch selects the 2nd best defenseman from the 2018 NHL draft in... Ryan Merkley, D, San Jose SharksRyan is not 17 anymore. He turned 18 yesterday and as a belated gift I'm happy to welcome him to the St. Roch family and I'm confident that he will mature and drop the crap as he continues to age. If Doug Wilson believes in him there's no reason I shouldn't as well.

Remember when you were 17 and you saw all those guys around you who did dumb shit things and you'd look at one of them and think, "what a douche bag. I don't want anything to do with that asswhipe." Flash ahead 3 to 5 years and despite all the talent in the world, you see that same guy and realize once a dick always a dick.
Such as in life so to is it in the sports world....so with that and with a great sigh of relief...the Simi Valley Kings are honored and proud to select the much more decent and equally talented Merkley....Nick Merkley of the Phoenix Coyotes.
Minnesota is on the clock.

I'm not asking Ryan to date my niece. I'm asking him to get better at playing defense in a hockey game. I'm confident he'll do just that.
Nick Merkley? He is to Ryan what Cooper Manning is to Peyton.
Minnesota is on the clock. Don't make me go all Judge Judy on you, now...

It's not his hockey ability...it's his attitude...great that you get a good talent but team cancers are team cancers...he needs a crash course on humility...time will tell if he gets it.
As for Nick...little early to call him Cooper...I'd be happy with Eli.

This has been a beautiful exchange. What a league.
BTW: If there's one manager in this league that is speaking from experience, it's Paul/Simi Valley. Ryan Merkley and Anthony DeAngelo seem very much cut from the same cloth.

Exactly...DeAngelo didn't have the pre-draft hype but he's carried the baggage of being a cancer for a while and NOW he's in NY where it wont get any easier. He's shown glimpses and I hope he continues to grow because he has a lot of upside. He just needs to get over the image he created for himself.

I remember when the Bruins traded two players that weren't mature enough for their liking. Whatever happened to those two guys? The next time I worry about a guy being a locker room cancer on my FANTASY team will be the first. You know who else I'd welcome onto my fantasy team? Mike Hoffman. Evander Kane. Alexander Radulov. DeAngelo didn't have the pre-draft hype That's right - he didn't. And this isn't a third round pick, either, but that's what you spent to get DeAngelo. You know who you could have drafted with that pick instead because he went two picks later? You guessed it, Nick Merkley.

I used a third round pick that is an NHL player...hmmmmm...that's a bad thing now is it? Let's not confuse him with your 3rd rounder that year Matt Puempel.

If your argument is that the Bruins/Pete Chiarelli are morons, I agree 100%.
Don't get me wrong here, that's a 10-bell selection by you, especially in the 5th. Great, fantastic gamble, man.
That being said, the whole R.Merkley thing has been really unique. Kessel was "weird", and so Dougie Hamilton was considered too. Seguin just seems like he was immature in his personal life, and his on-ice performance has always been good, even then.
DeAngelo went 19th overall, Merkley 21st overall. Believe me, there was the same hype around DeAngelo at the time. The guy put up 71pts in 51gp in his draft year. Merkley did 67pts in 63gp. Fairly comparing them is not that simple, but I assure you, they were very similar coming into their draft class.
The DeAngelo stuff was more public, where it seems he made use of racial slurs and got into altercations with teammates. I think there was a charged situation with a referee where he went over the line too. The books not out on DeAngelo, but TB gave up on him pretty fast, and he's moved around a couple more times too, with mixed results.
Merkley's story has been more vague and hush-hush, but his issue seems more on-the-ice problems than off. His coasting, lackadaisical defensive effort, and refusal to acknowledge coaching is what it seems to be. Some teammates apparently love him, others aren't the biggest fans. I haven't come across anything about him crossing the line with teammates, but you never know. Maybe he gets his head out of his ass, and meets his potential. If so, Doug's made a real good pick just now.

Definitely no argument that he is a strong 5th round pick but until the jury finishes deliberating we won't know what he will be as a fantasy or NHL player.

Sorry for absence I had to go volunteer on a committee. If at 17 I knew all the volunteering I would be doing later in life I would have said "pound sand". So with that off my chest. Minnesota welcomes Jakub Skarek G NY Islanders.
