Each manager has 40 roster spots TOTAL to work within. That's made up of 23 MAJOR slots, and another 17 MINOR slots. Column A on the spreadsheet (SLOTS) indicates which slots are being used through-out your franchise. Slots 1-23 in the MAJOR section has your actual game-roster (FanTrax). The ones that will be tallying points for you in the season. Beneath that, in the MINOR section (slots 24-40), you have your players who you own the rights to (I.E. others can't take them as IR replacements, or sign them as free-agents, etc.), but don't tally any points for you unless they are on your MAJOR roster.
On top of that, each year we run the EL Draft, which gives you the tools to add 5 more NHL Entry-Level Players to your franchise. So, keep in mind that you'll potentially have a minimum of 5 players being added to your total roster each year.
If you have been trading for other people's draft picks, keep in mind that when you go to use those picks at the draft, that you need the roster slots to store those new players. In other words DON'T HAVE MORE DRAFT PICKS THAN YOU CAN USE. If you run out of roster slots, but still have draft picks to use, you'll have to either free a spot up through a transaction (Trade, Waivers, Buy-out), postpone your selection in the EL Draft until you do have a free roster slot, or choose to just have your draft pick(s) expire, unused.
