Hello everyone,
All the polls have closed as part of our rules discussion, so we are moving onto the next stage of our DHL off-season.
As voted on by the league, we are adopting a new contract structure for TERM Players this year ahead of Free Agency, from here on out referred to as the "Allen Contract Structure". Part of the process of this new system is that managers will have the chance to extend or end certain TERM contracts on their team (an "Option"), which will continue to occur once every off-season ahead of the EL Player Draft.
What complicates things in this matter is the fact that we have many existing multi-year contracts that need to essentially be "retrofitted" into this new system. Some players that have already contributed to their team for a year or more past when their Option year was supposed to be. So in addition to this off-season's class of Option players (2022), some teams have to address what would have been their Options from previous years.
To fairly manage this, and to recognize the service already rendered by these players, we are essentially going to treat contracts that WOULD have previously gone through the Option process as if a decision WAS made at the time. This means that players that NATURALLY would be part of the 2022 Option class can be extended up to the full 3 years, but players that SHOULD have been part of the 2021 Option class can only be extended a maximum of 2 years (likewise, players of the 2020 Option class can at most be extended to play this season, aka 1 year). Additionally, as extensions in this system raise a player's salary, some players may cost more this season than you had previously signed them for. Accordingly, managers can choose to RELEASE these players, as if that was the choice they had made when the original Option had come up. That roster slot and salary would be refunded to you, and that player would now be deemed a Free Agent.
As things are in flux right now, I didn't want to mess up our official spreadsheet. So, I've copied over everyone rosters into a DHL Allen Transition spreadsheet, which we will be using temporarily during this shift:

If you go to your team's tab, you will see a bunch of green cells. A green cell represents an Option. If it's in the 2022 column (this coming season), that means the player naturally is in this year's Option class, or is one of those "retrofit" Options. The decision needs to be made now. If the green cell is in 2023, that means the player's contract is in B Status this season, are will be part of next off-season's Option class. I included future Options on this spreadsheet simply so you can each be aware of who needs a decision made in a year's time.
If you mouse over their 2022 salary, a note will pop up to display what your choices are for the player's salary going forward. You'll have to choose one of the options listed. Also indicated there is what their salary was in the previous system, in case anyone wants to use that as a basis for their decision.
You may also see columns with gray Xs, Ys and Zs. Those are simply there to convey to you how many years a player will be on your books for, if you decide to retain the player and go with an X extension (3y), a Y extension (2y), or a Z extension (1y).
In order for everyone to make their choices fairly, and so no one is basing their decisions on other managers' choices, I will PM you each individually for your choices. My Options are already completed and have been filed away with today's date, so there's no worry about me having an advantage in this regard. Once I have received them all, I will publish the decisions made, and we can start looking at EL Player Draft dates.
If there are any questions, feel free to ask here, or otherwise in our PM conversation.
Thanks.
