Matchup of the Week: Oslo v. Portland
An epic match that came down to a single assist from Sid the Kid in a coach crushing defeat of the Canucks on Saturday night. A single assist from the prodigal son from Cole Harbour to hand the previously (technically) undefeated Buckaroos their first loss. A lonely apple that could not have been matched by either Quinn Hughes or John Marino. I would welcome you to the loss category, but unfortunately I am at the helm of the only team who has yet to visit that party in the 2021/22 season. The rest of the categories weren’t all that close, to be honest, but it was a bit of an epic regardless.
Performance of the Week (skaters): Moscow Red Army (19 goals, 29 assists, +11, 165 shots, 18 STP, 72 hits, 77 blocks, 18:55 TOI)
I was about halfway typing up a different teams’ stats into the winning slot here when I realized that our Commie friends took the blue collar route and actually out-performed that team. In a hobby which focuses so much on pure offense, I like this league because of its focus on the peripheral stuff, like hits, blocks, +/-, etc. And that’s what it came down to in the end. Quietly, or maybe not so quietly (I’m honestly not sure) Red Army has put together a stellar year sitting pretty comfortably in 2nd place. Kudos on a scrappy player stat triumph this past week, commish.
Performance of the Week (goalies): Morweena Reimnoceri (5 wins, 1.85 GAA, 234 saves, .947 SV%)
This was the chance that Morweena had to have the perfect week..this was it. Granted it was lost early when Vejmelka shutout Hellebuyck, but I think it was still pretty incredible that I even had the winning goalie on my roster and could have done it. Ah well, maybe one day. Anyways, I pity the Thunder who had to have this behemoth week of goaltending had against them.
Player of the Week: Jonathan Huberdeau (1 goal, 8 assists, +2, 10 shots, 3 STP, 3 hits, 21:47 TOI)
This one was buried a bit for me, but holy hell - 9 points in 3 games from Hubey-Doo this week. Have yourself a few games my dude. Even though 5 of those 9 points came against Buffalo, even if you took that game out of the mix he’d have had two points per game, which is also impressive.
3 Stars:
1) Timo Meier (4 goals, 2 assists, +5, 19 shots, 1 STP, 6 hits, 5 blocks, 18:46 TOI)
2) Aaron Ekblad (2 goals, 4 assists, +5, 15 shots, 3 STP, 1 hit, 4 blocks, 28:34 TOI)
3) Auston Matthews (5 goals, 1 assist, +1, 19 shots, 2 STP, 2 hits, 3 blocks, 19:36 TOI)
Other Notes:
Deferral Deadline Done - The deferred pick deadline came and went this past week - we saw Vegas make a trade in order to draft both Alexei Protas and Ilya Konovalov. Now, I have no idea who either of those jamokes are, but I’m assuming that 45% of the GMs in the league have some idea. So…good picks?
Montreal Meltdown - Was all the Canadiens news this past week? Did anyone else feel weird about this one? On one hand, I absolutely did not expect the Habs to do anything except what they are doing. Especially since they lost Weber and haven’t had Price play for them yet. So, like what did you expect? But, on the other hand, I suppose that losing KK to the Canes (which was one of my favourite things in the NHL the last few years) and then not really *doing* anything to make up for the fact you’ve lost two horses for you’ve lost isn’t really a good look either. Don’t get me wrong, I don’t think that Bergevin was a good GM who did anything worth keeping his job (last year was a giant fluke and I will die on that hill), but the fact that this was the last straw seems odd.
Morweena’s Mailbag:
Q:
A: This is a great question, Gritty. I have definitely been dropping the ball on not only asking for mailbag questions, but also just keeping up with providing quality material in this Review (not that the bar was ever high). Frankly, I just have been a lot more busy than I thought I would have been this year.
Q:
A: No, I absolutely will not ask for help. I'm way too proud, however, if there were any managers who wanted to guest spot on the review I wouldn't be opposed to it at all.
Q:
A: Don't get all in a huff, I still enjoy doing this, it's just that having the week end on Saturday night makes it hard for me to get this out in a good time-frame. But I'll still do it until each and every GM in this league has sent me weeks worth of hate-mail.
Q:
A: Exactly.
