Matchup of the Week: Melbourne v. Tampa Bay
This was a veeeeeeerrrrrry close match. The score doesn’t quite tell the story of how close it was - the Thunder squeaked out wins in goals by 2, assists by 1 and saves by 4. On top of that, they missed out on winning STP by one and TOI by 1 second. The two also tied in wins. Boom. Closest match of the year. For two teams who desperately needed to get into the win column they both put up a hell of a battle this week. Bravo lads.
Performance of the Week (skaters): Simi Valley Kings (19 goals, 27 assists, +21, 157 shots, 13 STP, 75 hits, 37 blocks, 19:58 TOI)
I don’t like giving it out to the same team twice in a row, but the Kings earned it again this week. Topping 3 categories including a whopping 19:58 average TOI. That’s what really stood out to me for Simi this week. As a manager who doesn’t really focus on that category, it blows my mind how a team can attain that amount of ice-time in a week.
Performance of the Week (goalies): Portland Buckaroos (3 wins, 1.51 GAA, 110 saves, .948 SV%)
The (technically) undefeated Buckaroos hosted the previously undefeated Reimnoceri and their travelling clown car of goalenders this week and boy did they rise to the occasion in net. Well, their prized FA signing Vasilevskiy did with back-to-back shutouts. Saros was there too, but like, kinda I guess, but this was definitely the Vasi show.
Player of the Week: Tristan Jarry (3 GP, 3 wins, 0.67 GAA, 91 saves, .978 SV%)
I have never given Jarry a lick of credit towards how he plays. I always sort of assumed that he was an average goalie on a team that makes goalies look real good (see Matt Murray). Well, he sure showed me - this week anyways. The Penguins, not unlike our very own Mastodon, have had a rough start to the season with injuries. While they are getting healthier, they are still not 100% which is why I believe that this week is so impressive. Really is too bad that the Aces Wild couldn’t have translated it into a victory.
3 Stars:
1) Alex Ovechkin (4 goals, 3 assists, +2, 15 shots, 2 STP, 5 hits, 1 block, 22:30 TOI)
2) Cale Makar (4 goals, 3 assists, +5, 18 shots, 2 STP, 8 hits, 9 blocks, 24:16 TOI)
3) Nazem Kadri (2 goals, 6 assists, +6, 16 shots, 3 STP, 3 hits, 20:09 TOI)
Other Notes:
A Trade! - A minor one, but a trade nonetheless. In this swap we saw the Coyotes and Hawks swap 5th rounders - St. Roch got a deferred pick in the latest draft in exchange for a 5th rounder in 2022 taking the clock and pressure off Castleford and placing it on Hawks GM, Doug. The Hawks organization wasted no time in drafting Martin Fehervary of the Washington Capitals. Shortly thereafter (and the morning after his NHL debut), Morweena used their second deferred pick to select Sean Durzi of the Los Angeles Kings. Will either pick turn out? Time will tell.
New York Alcatrazes - The Islanders are locked out until at least the 30th after 4 more members of the team tested positive for Covid. What was already a rough start for members of the DHL who rely on Islander players just became that much worse. Hopefully fortunes will turn sooner than later, but as of now, not great.
Matt Murried - Matt Murray was placed on waivers, in what is a hilarious twist in the Senators saga of being just an utterly incompitent team. Didn’t Melnyk promise that the team would be competitive and spending to the cap by now? What a joke.
