The Dynasty Hockey League season began last night but for the Wuest Memorial Trophy favorite St. Roch Hawks the roster that took the ice is not the one fans and the front office expected to see. Due to a rash of injuries just before the season began as well as team captain Nathan MacKinnon contracting COVID-19 the team was missing many of its biggest weapons when they started their highly anticipated matchup against the Tampa Bay Thunder.
"We're missing Bo (Brock Boeser), Nail (Jack Hughes) and El Capitán (MacKinnon)," said Hawks General Manager Doug Wilson. "That's forced us to juggle the lineup a bit for opening night but we're hopefull all three guys will be back soon. For now, though, it's an opportunity for some other guys to get into the lineup and show what they can do."
Hughes, who is nicknamed Nail because the team considers him the biggest draft bust since Nail Yakupov, injured his wrist after running into the boards during a practice on Monday. Hawks Alternate Captain Tyler Seguin described how the injury happened. "The ####ing guy is just skating during a drill, nobody anywhere near him, and then starts yelling, 'I can't stop! I can't stop!' and he goes hard into the boards. BOOM! He goes in hard. Like he was blind and didn't see them coming. Then he lays on the ice in a heap holding his wrist and crying. 'It hurts! My wrist! Help!' We just stared at him and then the trainer, who was over on the bench, just shakes his head in disgust, puts out his cigarette and heads over there to help him. We went over to the other side of the rink and did our drills over there until he was gone. They took him off on a stretcher for God's sake. A stretcher! It was a wrist injury because the guy couldn't stop himself from running into the boards. Apparently he passed out from the pain so that's why they needed the stretcher. It was pathetic."
Boeser, who is nicknamed Bo because hockey players are pretty lazy when it comes to assigning nicknames, has an undisclosed injury but HSS insider Chloe Sienna has learned that the injury occurred when he was stabbed while thwarting a bank robbery. During an exclusive interview Sienna learned that Boeser had wandered onto the set of a movie and mistakenly believed that an actual bank robbery was in progress. He stepped in to stop the robbers when one of them stabbed him with a stunt knife, thus not piercing the skin but severely bruising his ribs. "I was wondering why everyone was dressed up like cowboys, why there was a horse outside the bank and why there was no ATM. That's why I went in to begin with - I was going to ask them where the ATM was but I saw this guy with a bandana on, not unusual these days - I thought it was just a neck gaiter - but he had a gun pointed at the teller and there were all these people with cameras filming the whole thing but not stopping them. I said, '#### this, I'm gonna do something!' so I grabbed the guy with the pistol and threw him out the window - which broke REALLY easily. Then the other guy, who had to be on drugs or something, is like, 'Hey man, why aren't you in costume? Are they going to fix this in post or something?' so I started after him and that's when he stabbed me. The people behind the cameras didn't realize it was a fake knife and thought I was seriously injured because they started yelling, 'Cut! Cut!' and I said, 'No, I'm not cut. But I think he broke a rib.'"
As for the captain, Nathan MacKinnon, he has tested positive for COVID-19 but is asymptomatic and fully vaccinated. He is expected to make a full recovery and be back in the lineup soon but DHL rules dictate that he cannot play until he tests negative.
Hawks head coach Doug Weight is taking the changes in stride...for now. "I deal with the players that are available to me that day. If someone gets traded, injured, sick - I can't worry about that. I deal with what's in front of me and the 23 guys that are on the ice each day. Today that means we work with Rickard Rakell, Alex Iafallo and Craig Smith. We signed those players to give us depth in case we had injuries and that's exactly what they are providing."
When asked what he expected from the depth players now thrust into the lineup Weight seemed pessimistic. "Not much. I mean, these guys were on the (AHL Finnish) Flash for a reason. They're not that good. You think I want to have to play Alex ####ing Iafallo, for God's sake? The guy is dog feces. Not fresh dog feces, either, he's the kind of dog feces that's been sitting in the sun for a while and has turned white. He's petrified dog feces. But...that's what we have to go with for now so let's hope he can do something while he's here."
After one day of their matchup against the Thunder the Hawks find themselves down 6.5 - 5.5 after Thunder forwards Max Pacioretty, Jonathan Marchessault and Steven Stamkos combined for a ridiculous three goals, three assists and 13 shots on goal in just nine periods of play. New Hawks defenseman Adam Larsson set the tone for his season with five hits on the first day and his defense partner Alec Martinez played a ridiculous 26 minutes while contributing three hits of his own and two blocked shots. Mike Smith is expected to be the first goalie to get a chance between the pipes later tonight as day two action begins.
