Matchup of the Week: Morweena v. Simi Valley
Well folks, turns out it can be done. The Morweena Reimnoceri playing the part of spoiler took down the unstoppable force that was the Simi Valley Kings. Now, this isn’t to say that Simi Valley wasn’t very, VERY close to winning this week. Losing assists and shots by just one of each respectively can’t feel good, but it does happen. I mean, it’s gotta sting more after Morweena sold off just about every player that gave them any sort of credibility….but let’s not dive too deep into that. After all, Morweena paid their dues, time after time. They’ve done their sentence, but committed no crime. And bad mistakes? They’ve made a few. They’ve had their share of sand kicked in their face, but they’ve come through. Morweeeeeeena are the champions, my friends (this week). And they’ll keep on fighting, till the end (of the regular season).
Sorry to ruin the perfect season Paul...
Performance of the Week (skaters): Nebraska Buffalo (20 goals, 24 assists, -10, 163 shots, 17 STP, 94 hits, 86 blocks, 20:23 TOI)
I’m giving this one to Nebraska this week knowing full well that Oslo and St. Roch put up very impressive weeks as well. However, the Buffalo in all their shaggy bison-ness put up the most complete statistical week of us all. Ranking 1st in 5 of 8 categories is almost as impressive as Morweena defeating the undefeated team this week. Led by Gabriel Landeskog and Blake Wheeler Nebraska lay a solid beatdown on the 5 Holes, moving them up to 3rd in the league a week before playoffs are set to start.
Performance of the Week (goalies): Oslo Mastodon (4 wins, 1.50 GAA, 126 saves, .955 GAA)
Good week for the teams named after shaggy four legged animals...After the week that Hellebuyck had for Oslo this one was still a harder choice than it should have been. Shoutouts to Vegas and St. Roch who also had very good weeks, but just not as good. For what it’s worth, I always like to factor in saves when comparing SV% and GAA. In my mind, the more shots you face, the more impressive the lower numbers. ANYWAYS, great week from the netminders here which helped secure a HUGE win over Vegas and an incredibly exciting final week as six teams will battle it out for the final three spots in the playoffs.
Should note that Morweena had a pretty good goalie week too. Not as good, obviously, but good enough to help hand Simi Valley their first loss of the year.
Player of the Week: Adam Fox (4 GP, 1 goal, 10(!!) assists, +3, 7 shots, 8 STP, 2 hits, 8 blocks, 24:42 TOI)
“Holy shit”, was what I literally said aloud when looking at the week Fox had. I knew in the back of my mind he was having a real hot run there for the Rangers, but that’s ridiculous. I guess when you casually drop 5 assists in a single game against the Flyers you’re bound to have a good week, but man. 11 points in 4 games. Come on. Almost 25 minutes of ice-time. Super-human. Who is this guy? Imagine if Fox was still battling for power-play time with D’Angelo? I’m glad he’s getting his shot and running with it. The Rangers are going to be a force sooner than later it seems.
3 Stars:
1) Juuse Saros (3 GP, 3 wins, 0.67 GAA, 80 saves, .976 SV%)
2) Mika Zibanejad (4 GP, 4 goals, 4 assists, +2, 13 shots, 5 STP, 5 hits, 5 blocks, 21:40 TOI)
3) Cam Talbot (3 GP, 3 wins, 1.00 GAA, 89 saves, .967 SV%(
Other Notes:
More Trades! - there were three more trades this week. Two involving Morweena and one not. With 6 days left until the deadline, how many more will we see? They're all broken down below.
Canadian Covid Cancellations - The Scotiabank North Division finally got a taste of what it's like to have games cancelled this week. Just when we thought the North had it right...leave it to the Habs to mess it all up.
NHL Season Extended - the league announced last night that the regular season will be extended to May 11th. I don't think it'll affect us much (if at all) but just something to keep in mind.
Morweena Defeated Simi Valley - Has this been mentioned yet?
Morweena’s Mailbag:
Q: Nathan McKinnon and Connor McDavid are currently the highest paid players in the DHL at 70 eye watering $ for many seasons to come. How close does Vasilevskiy get to that total when he hits the market this off-season?
A: My guess is somewhere in the next timezone over from wherever $70/year is. Thing about the goalies is that I think managers are weary of devoting too much of their payroll to them. The current highest paid goalie in the DHL is Carey Price at $35 - which is exactly half of the McMoneymakers. Now, when Price was signed to this deal (2016) he was probably worth it, but since then he's had a few down years and even at his best, hasn't been nearly the best in the league. Now, obviously Vasilevskiy is up there as the best FA goalie available along with Hellebuyck, but even with those two rolling in their prime I don't know that they're going to crack $30. But hey, I didn't think we'd ever see a player hit $70 and now we have two. So who knows.
Trade Deadline Primer:
Trade 3:
Morweena Sent:
Tyson Barrie (D)
Brandon Tanev (LW, RW)
Oslo 2nd 2021
Tampa Bay Sent:
Kappo Kakko (RW)
Rasmus Dahlin (D)
Tampa Bay 1st 2021
Tampa Bay 3rd 2022
My Take:
On paper the Lightning seemed to have paid a premium for the high-flying Barrie. However, with Barrie signed for two more seasons after this one and clicking the way he is with the Oilers, this might be a steal. Dahlin and Kakko are very highly rated prospects, but in their current situations aren't quite living up to the hype. Only time will tell if Tampa Bay overpaid for Barrie, but looking at things in the short term, this was a huge add for the new manager with sights on the postseason.

Trade 4:
Melbourne Sent:
Shane Gostisbehere (D)
Melbourne 3rd 2021
Morweena Sent:
Sam Reinhart (C, RW)
My take:
It's hard to call anyone on the Sabres this season a "bright spot" but, gun to my head, Reinhart might be one of them this year and on the off chance that he and Eichel (if he ever plays again for Buffalo) reunite, this could be a stellar add for Melbourne. Lots of ifs though. Sending back Gostisbehere isn't much of a loss, he's hardly the player who lit up the Flyers powerplay as a rookie all those years ago. And to shed $12 next season might be worth the 3rd rounder. From Morweena's perspective, it's an extra 3rd rounder for Stamkos and Buchnevich.

Trade 5:
Haukiputaan Sent:
Ryan O'Reilly (C )
$15 2020
Melbourne Sent:
Andreas Johnsson (LW, RW)
Portland 3rd 2021
Nebraska 5th 2021
My Take:
I think that this is a very good add for a great price for Melbourne. O'Reilly, at worst, is a great replacement for Eichel who, last I checked, didn't have a timetable to return. Best case scenario, O'Reilly is a great addition down the gut for the Bushrangers who already boast Kadri, Couturier and Eichel. For Haukiputaan, picks are always good to have and it's always better to get something for a guy you're going to lose anyway

Playoff Race:
As St. Roch alluded to, this is going to be a hell of a final week.
Safe to say that Melbourne and Simi Valley have locked up the top two spots and I’m fairly certain that even if Nebraska loses this week the worst they could wind up in the 6th seed - so that’s your first three teams in the playoff dance. Now...for the last three spots.
St. Roch, Moscow, and Tampa bay are currently occupying them, but close behind are Oslo and Vegas who could very well sneak into the party.
Now, St. Roch has the easiest matchup on paper as they play the 1-9-0 Minnesota 5 Holes. Tampa Bay has to find a way past Melbourne and Vegas through Simi Valley. Since Vegas is the team currently on the outside, this is a tough task, but at least we know that the Kings are human now. The most interesting match to watch this week will for sure be Oslo and Moscow. If Oslo can win, their record will be 6-4-1 and Moscow’s will be 6-5-0. That tie will push Oslo past Moscow in the standings and likely, depending on how St. Roch and Tampa do, into a playoff spot. This is going to be fun. Meanwhile Portland will aim to not finish the season 0-11-0 as they face the piping hot giant slaying Morweena Reimnoceri.
