Matchup of the Week: Nebraska v. Oslo
FINALLY! A match worthy of one of these breakdowns! On the surface this one seemed like a blowout for Nebraska. 9 - 3, yikes, right? Nah, let’s dive….Oslo lost goals and assists by one and two respectively...they were 2 seconds behind the Buffalo TOI and .006 SV% behind too. That’s pretty damn close if you ask me (believe me, I’m well aware nobody has asked me - like ever...but it is what it is). Combine the tight category race with the fact that both of these teams came into the week 4-2-0 and it makes for a dandy. I think we can all agree that 5-2-0 looks a lot better than 4-3-0 in the standings. So kudos to both managers (maybe a little more kudos to Nebraska GM Tim) for a great week and the first, in my very humble opinion, that is worthy of Matchup of the Week.
Honourable mention to the Morweena v. Minnesota matchup which saw Minnesota miss out on a 6 - 6 tie by 2 saves and a win by 3 saves. But when each team has yet to win a week...I mean...yeah…
Performance of the Week (skaters): Nebraska Buffalo (24 goals, 35 assists, +10, 209 shots, 20 STP, 94 hits, 82 blocks, 20:16 TOI)
The Buffalo cleaning up this week in the Review, but deservedly so. This was a great week from the Nebraska skaters and the recognition is earned for sure. Leading the way for a stellar week was Gabriel Landeskog followed very closely by a handful of players who all put up great numbers. Perhaps the Buffalo could be undefeated this year if they could figure out their goaltending, but hey, when the author finally picks up their first win in week 7, I don’t think I am in a place to criticize. And yet….
Performance of the Week (goalies): Melbourne Bushrangers (3 wins, 1.62 GAA, 85 saves, .944 SV%) AND Tampa Bay Thunder (3 wins, 1.66 GAA, 86 saves, .945 SV%)
That’s right. Two teams. But, like...look at the numbers. They’re almost identical. Which, in and of itself is insane, right? But, tuck that away and just appreciate those for a second. Very, very good. I feel like Oprah this week just giving shit out to everybody with a face.
Player of the Week: Thatcher Demko (3 GP, 3 wins, 1.00 GAA, 95 saves, .969 SV%)
Not a bad week for the young Mr. Demko here. Those numbers aren’t easy to put up in the best of circumstances, but even harder to do when you’re playing on the Canucks (who have been a wee bit of a dumpster fire this season) AND two of the three games are against the Maple Leafs (who shoot hot fire). Oh, and shutting out the Jets is also pretty hard, I think. So, big ups Thatcher. You’re really making Mr. Benning seem like a real brain genius for going and signing Braden Holtby this past off-season. Woof.
3 Stars:
1) Max Pacioretty (4 goals, 4 assists, +8, 24 shots, 1 STP, 6 hits, 1 block, 17:24 TOI)
2) Marc-Andre Fleury (3 GP, 3 wins, 1.66 GAA, 86 saves, .945 SV%)
3) Andrei Vasilevsky (3 GP, 3 wins, 1.62 GAA, 85 saves, .944 SV%)
Other Notes:
Tom Wilson and Jack Edwards - I need to get this off my chest. The Tom Wilson hit was bad. Very bad. HOWEVER - watch the NESN broadcast of that game (Bruins local) which is generally unbearable due to Jack Edwards was even MORE unbearable after that hit. The dude seems like he’s just some guy chilling in his basement in his lay-z-boy recliner, beer in one has, hot slice of pizza in the other just hurling negativity towards his television. I hate it. Now, I understand that yeah, this is a broadcast which is aimed at Bruins fans, and I get that they probably get some sort of vindication from hearing Mr. Edwards paraphrasing the same crap they are, but man does it irk me. Oh, and Tom Wilson needs to get his shit together. Thank you for listening.
Simi's Championship Parade - While I have no way of knowing for sure how the Simi Valley Kings celebrated their belated league title, I like to think that they saw how both the Lightning and the Buccaneers did it and built off that. Was there a boat parade? No, bigger. Instead of boats on a river it was Cruise ships on the ocean. And each member of the team had their own (except for Cervenka, he had two). Did they hurl the trophy between the ships a la Brady and Gronk? No, they launched it on prototype Space X mini rockets and flew it into orbit before trying to land it on the adjacent ship. The Kings also were able to get Selena Gomez to perform a full concert while straddling two fighter jets which flew constantly above the ships. Pretty badass. Probably...
Morweena’s Mailbag:
Q: Did Minnesota name their team after a 36 hour, drug fuelled, pornhub bender?
A: Uhh...maybe…? I mean...anything is possible. Now, no judgement if they did. I think we can all agree that once in a while things go off the rails a little bit for us and we wake up one day and say aloud to nobody in particular; “what the fuck was *that*?!”. But, if I had to put my finger on it, I would say that Minnesota is a real baseball fan and has an unhealthy love for all batters hitting 5th, or, in the 5 hole. That or the goalie thing. Anyone’s guess really.
Q: What’s the trade deadline going to look like, both in the NHL and DHL? Will we see less movement this year with the uncertainty of the world?
A: Honestly, I think we will see less in the NHL and about the same in the DHL, only less big trades and more minor ones.
In the NHL, I think that teams aren’t as willing to make moves this year. Teams seem to be churning through a lot of bodies this season with the schedule being so hectic and Covid lording over their every move. I think that NHL teams are going to be less able to move players based on the need to for those bodies and a lot of teams are tight to the cap. Now, I think there will still be trades, but I wouldn’t get your hopes up for a circus.
In the DHL I think we will see a different year too. I believe that a lot of teams around here are hesitant to sell assets after what happened last year, on top of that with the shorter year races are going to be tighter, and on top of those two points, keeping up with injuries, delays, Coivd protocol, and whatever else might pop up - making deals seems to be very difficult this season. That said, I think a handful of smaller trades will still take place, just again, not on the same scale as we are used to.
