Minnesota (8-13-0) v. Haukiputaan (10-6-5) - Minnesota wins 8 - 4
Matchup of the Week: Vegas v. Morweena
This was a big matchup for Morweena. A win last week and I believe they would have jumped into 5th place and a playoff matchup with the banging up Mastodon. Instead, losing by a single goalie win and 0.03 GAA Morweena now has to face the corn-powered juggernaut that is the Nebraska Buffalo. This isn’t to discredit Vegas on a great final matchup for the 2019/20 season. They had nothing to play for but gave it their all.
Performance of the Week: Moscow Red Army (25 goals, 27 assists, +3, 169 shots, 18 STP, 71 hits, 60 blocks, 20:15 TOI, 3 wins, 1.76 GAA, 133 saves, .950 SV%)
For the 5th week IN A ROW it’s Moscow. It’s not even fun anymore. Hey GM Adam, why don’t you try throwing up a stinker for a change? Give someone else a chance? But seriously, this team is cruising right now - it’s a Communist league and we’re just trying to make our way in it. I can’t even say anything else. Just ridiculous.
Player of the Week: Gabriel Landeskog (3 goals, 6 assists, +2, 12 shots, 3 STP, 5 hits, 1 block, 21:47 TOI)
Landeskog hasn’t quite been on the 75 point pace he was on last year, but weeks like this past one remind you that he is still an elite player playing with elite talent and should always be considered dangerous. What I like about this is how both he and MacKinnon had almost identical weeks - putting these two on the same team would be lethal. Make it happen. Do it. Make more trades. Do it. Do it. Do it.
Minor Leaguer of the Week: Connor Hellebuyck (2 GP, 2 wins, 0.50 GAA, 54 saves, .982 SV%)
All that glory wasted in the minors. All those wins...that sterling GAA...that near perfect SV%...wasted.
Flop Of The Week: Evgeny Kuznetsov (0 points, -3, 5 shots, 5 hits, 16:10 TOI)
For a guy who plays top 6 minutes on a team that has Ovechkin, Kuznetsov really should be doing a bit more than what he did last week. Even if he’s playing 2nd line - doesn’t that in theory include Oshie and/or Kovalchuk and/or Wilson? Oy vey - let’s hope, for the sake of Reimnoceri fans across the world that he turns it around for round 1.
3 Stars:
1) Nathan MacKinnon (2 goals, 6 assists, +4, 19 shots, 2 STP, 1 hit, 22:35 TOI)
2) Leon Draisaitl (4 goals, 4 assists, +5, 13 shots, 2 STP, 20:53 TOI)
3) Ryan Nugent-Hopkins (2 goals, 5 assists, +4, 8 shots, 2 STP, 3 hits, 2 blocks, 19:01 TOI)
Other Notes:
The Dreaded Tie(breaker): Seems fitting that after a year with such a ridiculous amount of ties in the DHL we have the playoff seeding come down to a tiebreaker. With Simi Valley and Nebraska both ending the regular season with 32 points, the Whalers Division crown came down to a who had the better record against each other in the regular season. In this case it's Simi Valley, but, wouldn't ya know, in their second matchup they tied. COME ON.
Formal Apology: I would like to take this time to issue a formal apology to the Simi Valley Kings. There is an outside change that I *MAY* have slightly underestimated them at the beginning of the year and there might be a chance that they don't finish the year in 8th...I would also like to apologize to the rest of the DHL for unleashing the beast...that's my bad, guys...
Morweena’s Mailbag
I know it’s not the news you want to hear - but any sort of playoff primer is going to have to wait until tomorrow. As I mentioned in the shoutbox last night - been a hell of a week or two so just getting the bare minimum out has been a struggle. But I am hoping to hand out some end of season awards, preview some playoff matchups (that will be a day old) and put a bow on the regular season. As always, I appreciate you guys humouring me and taking the time to read my nonsense each week. I have had a blast doing it and will continue on until the DHL has a champion.
