Matchup of the Week: Haukiputaan v. Morweena
Finally - a no brainer. With all the ridiculously lopsided wins this week, Haukiputaan and Morweena strolled hand-in-hand across the finish line simultaneously for the leagues 10 millionth tie this season*. After closely trailing heading into the Sunday games, the Ahmat came back to tie Morweena in both goalie wins and hits to knot things up between the division rivals. The tie between these two also *might* solidify a first round match-up between Haukiputaan and Oslo, though, if I’m honest, I’m not sure what the tie break would be for points between the Ahmat and the Reimnoceri. In either case, a crazy week and another tie for the 2019/20 season.
*numbers may be slightly exaggerated
Performance of the Week: Moscow Red Army (22 goals, 36 assists, +5, 186 shots, 22 STP, 65 hits, 74 blocks, 20:04 TOI, 4 wins, 2.50 GAA, 106 saves, .914 SV%)
Guys, I think Moscow might be hitting their stride at the worst possible time for everyone by Moscow...with healthy goalies and no injuries to report, the Red Army is rolling and as Melbourne found out this week, that means trouble. Best of luck to the sorry sods who have to deal with this team in the couple of weeks because they’re hotter than fire.
Player of the Week: Kevin Fiala (4 goals, 5 assists, +4, 14 shots, 3 STP, 15:59 TOI)
Where the hell did this come from?! First of all, Kevin Fiala...secondly, on the Wild?! This is a monster week out of Fiala for the 5 Holes who have this kid locked up for another two seasons. If this kind of skill can become consistent, Minnesota is going to have a gem on their hands.
Minor Leaguer of the Week: Pavel Francouz (3 GP, 3 wins, 2.00 GAA, 106 saves, .946 SV%)
Morweena reeeeaaaaally could have used those stats this week but instead, nobody got them. Good deadline signing though...
3 Stars:
1) Artemi Panarin (1 goal, 6 assists, +1, 7 shots, 3 STP, 2 hits, 5 blocks, 20:24 TOI)
2) JT Miller (2 goals, 4 assists, -4 rating, 14 shots, 3 STP, 6 hits, 3 blocks, 20:30 TOI)
3) Calvin Peterson (2 GP, 2 wins, 1.00 GAA, 77 saves, .975 SV%)
Other Notes:
Morweena vs the lower-body - At the beginning week, the Reimnoceri pushed what little future chips they had left into the middle and dared to swing for the fences. At the end of the week, Morweena is dealing with losing Stamkos and Stone for likely the rest of the year and most of the depth that was acquired as a failsafe for injures is being called into action. I will save you all from the rant I had - but if you want a glimpse into my rage, it was about on par with this:
Other Injuries - I know lots of other guys had huge injuries this week, Laine and Markstom come to mind, but I have had an insanely busy week and haven’t had the time to pay attention to other teams as much as normal - so sorry that I missed reporting the injuries to your key players. It’s not you, it’s me.
Blowout City - What is with all the lopsided wins this week? I mean, holy crap a 12-0 and THREE 10-2 wins?! What’s going on guys? My working theory is that with so much movement at the deadline we saw a lot of teams stack up against a lot of teams who sold off and maybe that...but still...yowza.
Morweena’s Mailbag:
Q: Will there be end of season awards and what will the categories be?
A: Yes there will be - it will be a mix of updated mid-season awards as well as some other ones I have not yet made up. But it will hopefully be entertaining.
Morweena’s Playoff Madness:
Well folks, we’re here. The final week of the season. After 21 weeks of slugging it out, dealing with injuries, making trades, singing free-agents, and cursing the hockey Gods, the highs and lows of the regular season are almost over. Key word there: almost. It’s the final week and there is only one spot locked in for the first round: Moscow - bye. The rest of us have to wait until Sunday night after the final buzzer in the Avalanche/Sharks game. What a way to end. Here’s some things to watch out for:
Simi Valley and Nebraska - who will earn the Round 1 bye and who will go into the meat grinder?
Who will Oslo face in Round 1 - Haukiputaan or Morweena? With the Mastodon a lock for either the 4 or 5 spot they only have the potential to see one or the other.
Who will take 1st place for the regular season? I mentioned that Mossow has locked in the Round 1 bye for winning the North Stars conference, but in terms of overall points they could potentially overtake Nebraska or Simi Valley for the regular season lead. That said, if all three teams win this week, it’s going to come down to a tie-breaker between Simi Valley and Nebraska for both the top spot in the league AND in the Whalers conference.
Which of the bottom 6 teams will play spoiler to the top 6? I hope that someone will take down a higher seed just for the chaos factor.
Good luck to everyone this week.
