Morweena (10-9-0) v. Portland (7-7-5) - Morweena wins 10.5 - 1.5
Haukiputaan (9-6-4) v. St. Roch (7-10-2) - Haukiputaan wins 7 - 5

Matchup of the Week: Haukiputaan v. St. Roch
Sometimes a great match-up for this section just gracefully falls into my lap and everything is great. This is not one of those weeks. Haukiputaan and St. Roch this week was, I suppose, the match which was the closest in terms of a few stats here or there changed the outcome and would have been bad news for Haukiputaan. Another 3 assists for St. Roch would have resulted in a tie - another 3 or 4 STP a win and with the race getting a scooch tight for the Ahmat, a win this time of year is a must.
Performance(s) of the Week: Moscow Red Army (21 goals, 40 assists, +17, 165 shots, 13 STP, 86 hits, 63 blocks, 19:41 TOI, 3 wins, 1.26 GAA, 128 saves, .962 SV%) / Oslo Mastodon (18 goals, 42 assists, +12, 196 shots, 17 STP, 41 hits, 52 blocks, 20:50 TOI, 5 wins, 2.50 GAA, 173 saves, .920 SV%)
This is a recording. Oslo and Moscow are very, very good. I’m thinking about editing my template to just have those two guys in this section to save myself some time each week. I mean, yikes. And heck, Moscow even had a great week of goaltending, which has been a well documented weak point for Big Red these last few months. Anyways, best of luck to whatever suckers have to face these guys in the playoffs.
Player of the Week: Mika Zibanejad (3 goals, 5 assists, +6, 15 shots, 2 STP, 4 hits, 5 blocks, 22:00 TOI)
Guess who’s back? Back again? Mika’s back. Player of the Week again! Zibanejad was one of, if not the, first Player of the Week after his bonkers start to the season. While he’s definitely been a solid player since then, he has obviously not been good enough to make it back to the top individual weekly honor in the DHL...until now. 3 games, 8 points, 15 shots, 22 minutes of ice-time. Mika is playing like a guy who wants to drag his team into the playoffs. Good for him, great for Moscow.
3 Stars:
1) Mark Scheifele (3 goals, 5 assists, 9 shots, 3 STP, 3 blocks, 20:15 TOI)
2) Jordan Binnington (3 GP, 3 wins, .330 GAA, 63 saves, .984 SV%)
3) Igor Shesterkin (3 GP, 3 wins, 2.34 GAA, 108 saves, .939 SV%)
Other Notes:
Injury Bug - This little fucker has been around a lot of late and this past week was no different. The latest victims: Rantanen, Reimer, Mrazek, Bjorkstrand, Hronek, Fowler, Tuch, Klefbom, Chychrun. It’s a tough time of the year for some GMs but it also separates the teams who are all smoke and mirrors and the teams who are good deep teams. It’ll be interesting to see how everything shakes out.
**** LATE ADD - I literally saw the news that Shesterkin and Buchnevich were hurt in a car accident as I was writing up the Moscow/Portland trade and that's nuts. Super scary for them and bad news for Oslo who's goaltending was being largely propped up by the dynamic rookie. ****
David Ayers - I will not rant about my Leafs...I will not rant about my Leafs….I will not rant about how the Leafs only managed to get like 6 shots on a guy who is not only an emergency backup goalie, but a guy who isn’t even a guy playing relevant hockey. I will not rant about how they seemed to decide that after they scored 2 goals on 2 easy shots they seemed to think that just because they goalie they were shooting on was a 42 year old guy who they light up on practice when Freddy needs a break, but the entire team was 42 year old beer leaguers and that they could just coast around and try to make those 20 foot saucers tap-in goals happen. I will not rant about how the Leafs’ two biggest stars were benched (and rightly so) in favour of Jason Spezza when a team who had already been carved by the media over two of their last three games desperately needed a win in arguably the most winnable situation outside of playing the Red Wings. I will not rant about it. I won’t. But hey, I love this guy - I think he seems like an awesome dude.
Morweena’s Mailbag Trade Deadline Coverage:
Okay, so obviously the mailbag didn’t open again...sue me...but for what it’s worth, it’s always open for questions, so maybe you guys are just sick of hearing my awful takes on your great questions - which is fair. BUT! What I do have for you guys this week is a DHL Trade Deadline Analysis Breakdown, or the DHL T-DAB. I’ll do my best to update this post as the day goes on with the trades we see cross the boards and my dumb brain’s thoughts on them. I’ll start with the trades we have seen already this past week and add from there.
Trade:
Morweena Sends:
Andreas Johnsson
$6 2020
Melbourne Sends:
Stephen Johns
T-DAB - Obviously this is a depth move for Morweena who is looking to gain some injury protection (which was wise after seeing Pesce go down for them shortly after this trade was completed). For Melbourne, it’s a move which sees them add assets for the future. Sure, both players are signed for another season after this, but Melbourne gains an extra $10 in cap space for 2020 and a player who historically has played top 6 minutes on a generally potent offence. I think for a depth move it’s good for what each team is after.
Trade:
St. Roch Sends:
Ryan Johansen
Alex Galchenyuk
Filip Zadina
Ville Heinola
St. Roch 1st 2021
St. Roch 2nd 2021
Portland Sends:
Sidney Crosby
John Carlson
Adam Henrique
$21 2019
T-DAB - As soon as Portland dropped the atom bomb on the trade deadline market by announcing he was a) a seller and b) who was on the block, I think the entire league was waiting for a team like Nebraska, Moscow or Simi Valley to scoop up a few of those big names but then when this trade came across the wire and St. Roch was on the receiving end I was shocked. Not the team you’d expect to do this, but I gotta say, I like this move a lot by the Hawks. Both Crosby and Carlson are signed next season so they obviously aren’t rentals and it gives St. Roch a huge boost in talent. Now boasting the two Cole Harbour boys (Crosby and MacKinnon) the Hawks are in a great spot to rocket up the standings next year. On top of that, if things go completely sideways they are a pair of great trade assets. For Portland, the top picks and prospects are a good return for a fresh GM looking to put his stamp on an inherited team. I respect the hell outta both these guys for pulling this massive deal off.
Trade:
Portland Sends:
Chiarot
Halak
Moscow Sends:
Reimer
Moscow 3rd 2021
T-DAB - The hunt for a goalie who will not get hurt continues here for Moscow. Will Halak be the guy or will the Red Army be the curse to hurt Halak for the Bruins? For GM Adam’s sake, let’s hope this works out and the Bruins rest Rask more often than not down the stretch. The add of Chiarot is a sneaky one - he’s a guy who hits, blocks, and shoots while logging a ton of ice-time and that’s not invaluable. For Portland, a 3rd round pick is a good get for expiring guys. Like this move for both teams.
Trade:
Morweena Sends:
Burns
Tarasenko
Bean
Simi Valley 3rd 2020
Morweena 1st 2021
Portland Sends:
Wheeler
Pacioretty
Pearson
T-DAB - Blockbuster number two from Portland here? I think so. This is a big time add for Morweena here at a pretty sizable price. Hopefully the Reimnoceri know what they’re doing sending out a guy like Burns while in the middle of a playoff push / hopeful playoff run. Will the additions of Wheeler and Pacioretty help? Probably. Stone and Pacioretty have been on fire of late and Wheeler is a great player in this league. Now, the return...I wouldn’t be shocked to see the Pirates go and try to flip Burns before the deadline here for more assets while gaining more picks, more caps space and stud forward Vladimir Tarasenko for the next 3 years on a pretty decent contract. Kudos to Portland here, they said they were going to sell, did, and have added a lot of future assets to really put a fresh stamp on this team.
Trade:
Morweena Sends:
$2 2021
St. Roch Sends:
Coleman
T-DAB - This is kind of a no brainer depth add for Morweena who was clearly taking advantage of that 72 hour sale in St. Roch. The Hawks are looking ahead to the future here and will no doubt turn this cash into another trade chip.
Trade:
Simi Valley Sends:
Carter
$1 2021
St. Roch Sends:
Smith
$4 2019
T-DAB - A good insurance add here for the Kings for minimal cost with Grubauer still hurt. Since Simi Valley has been decimated with injuries the last few weeks it seemed unlikely for them to add in a major way, but this makes sense. Again, the Hawks add future cap space and a bonus few weeks of Jeff Cater, verified stud.
Trade:
Morweena Sends:
Crawford
Oslo Sends:
Shattenkirk
T-DAB - Holy hockey trade Batman! After the injury hammer came down hard on Oslo during the deadline madness, this move seemed almost necessary. Crawford should start the majority of Chicago's remaining games even with Subban now in the mix. And even if it's a time share, Crawford is the clear 3rd string in Oslo. Meanwhile, the Reimnoceri posted about the desire to add a depth D man and got their wish. Shattenkirk (who may have even been signed earlier this season by Morweena) comes back in a 1-for-1 even player swap.
Trade:
Moscow Sends:
Neiderreiter
Morrissey
Portland Sends:
Burns
T-DAB - Like seeing this out of Moscow. It's a big time add after there were two more big time adds from other teams already. While Burns is a very strong addition to an already high octane offense it's tough to say if the Red Army will get Burns of past or Burns of the sad Sharks. Hopefully a mix? Who knows. Still worth the gamble and for a fairly reasonable cost to boot. I consider Niederrieter a salary swap here since he's not lived up to his past production which would have landed him at a $19 salary, so big fat fart sound on that piece, bit Morrissey with 2 seasons after this on an EL deal is nice. Personally I would have tried to pry more out of the Communist nation, but hey, if this is the best there was, it's still a good haul.
