Tough Break for Red Army on Opening Night
by Asbjørn Nygård
The 2019-20 Dynasty Hockey League season is less than 24 hours old but already there's been an injury that could have a major impact on a consensus pick as a Wuest Memorial Trophy contender.
Three time Wuest Memorial Trophy winner Moscow Red Army lost defenseman Adam Larsson for "months" due to a broken bone just above his ankle. The injury was suffered wen Larsson blocked a shot in the first period of the Red Army's game against Morweena Reimnoceri and while Larsson played the remainder of the game he was quickly ruled out once the game ended.
"When we got his boot off the leg immediately swelled up like a melon," said Red Army team doctor Vladimir P. Demikhov (who only spoke with us on the condition we include his claim that "the P. stands for 'P**sy'"). "I had never seen anything like that in my life so I passed out straight away. It was either the shock of seeing that or the fact that I had been drinking vodka throughout the game, who can tell. Anywho...once I came to I surmised that I was in the trunk of a car which, based on how rough the ride was, appeared to be a 1970s Corvair with no shocks travelling at high speed over a pothole filled dirt road."
Since the game was in Moscow the team was able to use their facilities to take an x-ray of the leg. The process took longer than normal as the staff first tried to take the x-ray using a very bright light on one side of the leg and then seeing if they could see the bones. At one point a staff member donned a welders mask to block out as much of the light as possible but he was unable to even see where the leg was and ended up staring at a chair for five minutes before proclaiming that Larsson had "no breaks but two more legs than he should have".
Finally Larsson was taken to a proper medical facility and diagnosed with the broken bone. The prognosis that he'll be out for "months" is due to the location of the injury and a tarot card reading that was done at the behest of team owner/GM Adam Luker.
Larsson's injury leaves the Red Army thin on the blueline as the season begins as fellow defensemen Brandon Montour and Noah Dobson are also not able to play. Moscow is now down to just six healthy defenseman on their roster but may have a new option as due to an injury to Nebraska Buffalo's minor league Nate Schmidt the Red Army's minor league defensemen Nicolas Hague could make his DHL debut soon. Sources tell us that Luker has already begun the process of talking with other owners/GMs about a possible trade to bring in defensive help as well. The good news for Moscow is that due in part to Larsson's sacrifice (he tied for the league lead in blocked shots with four) the Red Army lead the Reimnoceri in blocked shots by a score of 7-5 with four days remaining in the matchup.
