PANARIN TRADED IN FIRST OF
OFFSEASON MOVES FOR HAWKS
by Asbjørn Nygård
The St. Roch Hawks offseason officially began just over 72 hours ago as of this writing but the team front office is wasting no time in making moves. Reports out of St. Roch indicate that star left winger Artemi Panarin has been traded in a deal that will be announced after the Dynasty Hockey League championship.
Sources inside the St. Roch front office confirmed that the diminutive sniper was on the move but refused to say where he was headed or what the compensation would be. Panarin has two years left on his Entry Level Contract and was set to make $8 next year. Instead the Hawks now have a large void at left wing that they will need to fill either via trade, in the draft or via free agency.
"(Artemi) Panarin was a player we knew would draw a lot of interest on the trade market and it did not take long to move him," said Hawks Assistant General Manager Doug MacLean. "He was a great player for us for these last four years and we wish him best with the...whoops, almost let that slip. Let's just say we wish him well in the future."
Panarin was originally drafted by the then Stockholm Syndrome in 2015 with the 21st overall pick. After playing his rookie season with the Syndrome he then moved with the team to Atlanta and played as a Thrasher for one year before once again moving with the team to their current home in St. Roch. He's been one of the most popular players on the Hawks roster and his jersey was #3 in sales this past season behind only that of Brock Boeser and Pierre-Luc Dubois.
"This sucks, eh?" said Hawks fan Doug McKenzie who was at the team store getting some used gear as part of their annual after season sale when he heard the news. "I know that changes need to be made because this team sucked this year, eh? I mean, they were playing like a bunch of hosers. But losing Art sucks, eh? I hope we get something good in return. Otherwise (Hawks owner/general manager Doug) Stolhand can take off!"
This is the first move in what is expected to be a volatile offseason for the Hawks. After finishing a pathetic 4-16-2, 11th place in a 12-team league, it was obvious that changes were needed. Stolhand has indicated that MacLean and head coach Doug Weight would return next season and places none of the blame for the poor outcome on them. Stolhand addressed season ticket holders during a Q&A session earlier this week and said the majority of the blame lies at the feet of "guys that cashed in and then quit trying". Without naming players individually it's not hard to figure out he meant Corey Perry and Jonathan Quick.
Depending on the return for Panarin once the trade is officially announced the Hawks could have as much as $84 to spend in free agency as well as nine draft picks including three of the first 25 picks and five of the first 36 picks. That expected infusion of youth should add to an already stacked roster of prospects which could contribute to the major roster as soon as next season.
