As we head into the championship final of the 2023 Dynasty Hockey League season, I have some unfortunate news to share with everyone...
Jakub Bobro, former manager of the Bratislava Bears, passed away earlier this season. Going back to the fall, you'll remember that we were in a bit of a panic in finding a new manager to assume Jakub's team. During this time, I had mentioned how surprising that was, considering that Jakub seemed very eager to return to the DHL for another season. Being an online community for the most part, where it's not unheard of for someone to sort of vanish, I didn't think much of it at the time. We moved on as a league, and thankfully found a great new member of our league in Patrick of the Maine Mariners.
Sometime later, Jakub's father Peter contacted me to tell me of the unfortunate news (he had been granted access to Jakub's personal accounts, and was responding to the unanswered messages). While Jakub was only a member of the DHL a short time, he was a young man (I believe only 22) with a bright future ahead of him by all accounts, and his passing is absolutely tragic. I gave Peter my condolences, and mentioned that I would try and commemorate his son somehow.
Up to this point, our league's championship trophy has been referred to as the Wuest Memorial Trophy. This was named in dedication to Matthew Wuest, the owner/founder of CapGeek.com who passed away in 2015, and whose website played a part in getting our burgeoning fantasy league off the ground. While I will always appreciate Matthew Wuest's contributions to the world of hockey, I felt that Jakub Bobro, who had a direct, personal tie to our league, deserved to be honoured at the highest level.
So without further ado, as commissioner of the Dynasty Hockey League, I officially rechristen our championship trophy as the Bobro Memorial Trophy:
