Hello!
The NHL will begin its regular season on Friday Oct 7th. With a little under a week until puck-drop, we can start preparing our Opening Rosters.
1) Opening Rosters are due Fri Oct 7th at 1:59pmET/10:59amPT. That's 1 minute before puck-drop on the Sharks/Predators game. Between now and then, you are welcome to officially submit a roster on the boards in your team's section, or send one to me in a direct message, or at the very least have your roster set over on FanTrax. Even if you do either of the first 2 options, please also set your FanTrax roster to match. Whatever it is at that time of the deadline will be considered binding. Any transactions done past that deadline will count against your weekly transaction limit.
2) Speaking of which, Match #1 will allow one additional transaction per owner (4 total), because of how weird the NHL's schedule is to start the season. Despite being a combined week, Match #1 is still made-up of a smaller number of games than a normal match would be. There are 2 games in Europe on the 7th and 8th, but the rest of the league keeps playing preseason games until Tues 11th, when regular season games start in North America. Because Starting Rosters have to be due before the regular season starts, and because players may suffer injuries in preseason games after rosters have been already been submitted, I think an extra transaction would be fair.
3) On that same note, remember that IR Replacements cannot be made FOR your Opening Roster. You can choose to have IR eligible players simply start on your MINOR roster, or if you really want to place a player on IR, they may start on your MAJOR roster, and you can use your first transaction(s) of the week to place them on IR and select a replacement.
4) After positive experiences during the COVID pandemic, players of any injury designation (i.e. red-flag indicator) will now be eligible for IR Replacement. Previously, a player had to be on the NHL's official IR list to be eligible for DHL IR Replacement, but this will no longer be the case going forward. It will still cost 1 transaction to place a MAJOR player on IR and select a replacement from your MINOR roster.
5) Remember that Promotion/Demotion does not cost anything for goalies. It costs 1 transaction to claim a Free Agent IR goalie replacement, but otherwise which goalies you have on your MAJOR and which you have on your MINOR are totally up to you. Because of this, on the spreadsheet I will be setting every team's goaltending according to a default. It will NOT be reflective of who is actually on your FanTrax roster. It is up to managers individually to handle their goaltending from here on out. Accordingly, corresponding posts don't need to be made on the boards to track this stuff anymore either (again, outside of IR situations).
6) Additionally, only for Match 1, Minimum Goalie Starts will be lowered to 2. Even with North American games starting on Tues 11th, the rest of the league's starts sort of trickle in, with some NHL teams still not playing games until Fri 14th. From what I can see, there are about 4 teams that are at risk of not meeting 3 minimum starts due to the NHL's bizarre approach to the schedule. For Match #2 and on, Minimum Goalie Starts will return to being 3 per match.
7) One rule that is often overlooked is that each team is supposed to have a minimum number of each position on their MAJOR roster. Now, this only really comes up with blueliners, where sometimes people forget and only have 5 defensemen dressed to sneak an extra forward into the line-up. This is a real pain to enforce, especially if I'm a few days late on processing/noticing the move. I was considering automating this, actually setting a Minimum Active number of 6 for defensemen over on FanTrax. What this means is that if someone attempts to set their lines and leaves even 1 D slot empty, a warning will pop-up that their roster is illegal. Note that this warning came even if there are 6 defensemen on your MAJOR roster (i.e. on the bench), but not in the Active slot. I could see this getting really frustrating to deal with on a daily basis, so am going to go ahead WITHOUT it right now. But please, but try and be mindful of this throughout the year, otherwise I may have to resort to automating it.
Good luck, and good hockey, everyone!
